Community Mural Project: Wan Chai Neighborhood
In collaboration with Q+A Art Foundation
Project Overview & My Role:
I had the privilege of guiding a group of talented students through a full-scale mural project, spanning from initial research and design to real-wall execution. Centered on the unique spirit of the Wan Chai neighborhood, the students took complete initiative and worked with incredible spontaneity. My role was to provide creative guidance and coordination. I am immensely proud of what they achieved.
Visual & Artistic Features:
Surreal Narrative: A metaphorical story of a dragon searching for its ideal blooming flower, encountering a shell-less turtle along the way.
Mixed Media Collage: Incorporating recycled magazines and newspapers to add texture and depth.
Lego Installation: Creating a striking visual contrast between rigid geometric forms and organic patterns.Stylish Patterns: Infusing contemporary, eye-catching aesthetics into the local cityscape.
Educational Impact:
The project successfully inspired students to find extraordinary inspiration in ordinary surroundings. One student shared her surprise at discovering that Lego—something she always viewed merely as a toy—could be transformed into a meaningful medium for fine art.
"Creativity must be actively cultivated; when it is, endless possibilities emerge."
Behind the Scenes: The Research Stage
The images below capture our immersive field research across Wan Chai. Instead of relying on traditional photography, we challenged ourselves to record our memories and emotions using tactile materials like clay, pens, and ropes through various experimental techniques.
We processed our journey through expressive arts, fully engaging our five senses to connect with the neighborhood. Remarkably, the students discovered that their ears were far more sensitive to the environment than their eyes. I am thrilled by their willingness to venture out of their comfort zones and embrace these unique sensory discoveries.
