Eco-Art at My Alma Mater: Green Technology Mural
A collaborative expressive arts project designed and executed by students.
Giving Back as an Instructor
It was an incredible honor to return to my alma mater as an instructor, guiding the next generation through a large-scale expressive arts mural. In this hands-on project, students took charge of the entire creative lifecycle—from initial conceptual research and design to final real-wall execution.
Vision: Sea & Sky Harmony
The mural revolves around the theme of green technology and ecological balance. The core design visualizes a sustainable future where creatures of the sea and sky coexist in perfect harmony, painting a hopeful picture of biodiversity.
Innovative Eco-Collage
To bring the concept of sustainability to life, we went beyond traditional paint:
Mixed-Media Collage: Students layered upcycled magazine paper to add vibrant textures.
Upcycled Elements: We integrated used coffee filter papers and real coffee beans directly onto the wall.
The Message: This tactile, mixed-media approach serves as a literal representation of green technology and creative recycling in art.
🌀 From Chaos to Harmony: A Lesson in Ecological Balance
The images below capture a powerful turning point in the students' collaborative process, shifting from initial confusion to deep, shared awareness.
1. The Initial Chaos
In the beginning, students worked independently on a single transparent sheet, each drawing in their own individual style without consulting one another. The result was a visually cluttered piece that left the students feeling confused, unsatisfied, and disconnected.
2. The Breakthrough: Sensory Awareness through Music
To help them break through this block, I introduced an interactive music session. I asked them to play various instruments, focusing on timing and relying strictly on their intuition to play when it felt "right." Through this auditory exercise, they learned to listen actively and stay present. They realized that harmony happens when you develop a deep awareness of others and your surrounding environment.
3. The Harmonious Outcome
Returning to the visual artwork with this newfound awareness, they created a second collaborative piece. This time, they worked cohesively, and the students were immensely satisfied with the beautifully balanced result. This profound transformation perfectly mirrors our core theme of ecological balance—reminding us that survival and beauty depend on our awareness of other living creatures and the delicate environment we share.
